Corona del Mar - Spanish for "Crown of the Sea" - is one of the more beautiful communities in Newport Beach. Located 50 miles south of Los Angeles, and 70 miles north of San Diego, the boundaries are the seaward face of the San Joaquin Hills, south of Avocado Street to the city limits, including the new development of Irvine Terrace, north of Avocado. Corona del Mar ranges along a bluff at the south end of Newport Beach and includes some of the city’s most prestigious residential areas.
Corona del Mar AmenitiesStreets of Corona del Mar are named after flowers, and run in alphabetical order from Acacia to Poppy, each lined with a different variety of trees. Beautiful flower gardens on each street display the flower from which the street is named. Corona del Mar offers white sand beaches and coves that look like they came right out of a movie set. On the hills above the beaches are lookout points for the spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean and bay. In 1904, George Hart purchased from Irvine Ranch 706 acres to build summer cottages. Visitors wanted to stay, and settled beachward of what would become the Pacific Coast Highway. The small village was accessible only by a boat at high tide, or muddy road along the bluffs forming Newport Bay. In 1926, Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford cut the ribbon for the opening of the Highway, and serious growth began in Corona del Mar. Corona del Mar has no local municipal government, and receives all municipal services from Newport Beach. The community does have its own representative on the Newport Beach City Council. If you are a dog lover, Corona del Mar is very dog-friendly. Since it is part of Newport Beach, the city-run beaches allow dogs on the beach from 5:01 p.m. to 8:59 a.m.
