Balboa Island, Newport Beach

Balboa Island is man-made, a sandspit that was dredged, filled, and became part of Newport Beach in 1916. The bridge from "mainland" California was built in 1912, although it did not carry automobiles until 1929.  Balboa actually consists of three artificial islands in Newport Harbor:  Balboa, Little Balboa (joined by a 2-land bridge), and Collins Island (joined by a 1-lane bridge).  The Balboa community is attached to the mainland by a short bridge, and the privately-operated 3-car ferry.  One of the Island's highlights, the Balboa Island Ferry, began service in 1919.  It is still the best way to visit the island in the summer, as parking is limited.  Hershey's Market is at the ferry landing, and public restrooms.

Balboa Amenities

The main island and the little Island together measure about 2.60 miles. The 3-island Balboa community is a closely-knit group of professionals, families, retirees, students, and celebrities.  The islands are some of the most densely-populated areas in Orange County - 3,000 residents live in 0.2 square miles - a higher density than even San Francisco.  The perimeter of the island along the bayfront is dotted with piers for the homeowners' boats. Marine Avenue and Agate Avenue form the commercial spine of the island.  The homes are mostly cottage or Cape Cod styles, but you can sometimes find expansive, more contemporary homes. Considering the expensive real estate, it has managed to remain a quaint little town.

Can you believe that once lots sold on Balboa Island for $250.00? Now $3,000,000 is not unusual. Balboa is one of the most expensive real estate locations in Orange County.  An 1100 sq ft home sells for $1,329,000, and a bayfront home for $6,000,000.

Balboa is my favorite spot in Newport Beach. The weather, the views, the friendly people, and the attractive beach cottages just keep me coming back.  Over the years Balboa has become a favorite vacation spot to many others as well. Tourists from all over the world come to the islands and stay in one of the many vacation rentals, enjoy the summer days at the beach, and evenings at the fine restaurants.
